About Red Umbrella Project

We are a nonprofit for young women in Boston—restoring dignity, promoting wellness, and giving homeless teen girls the compassionate care they deserve. Behind every period kit we deliver is a deeper purpose: to remind each girl that she is not alone, and that her dignity is non-negotiable.

About Us

Our Mission

At Red Umbrella Project, our mission is rooted in dignity. We exist to support homeless teen girls and young women in Boston by providing them with essential sanitary products, women’s wellness support, and emotional encouragement.

We know that period poverty is more than a lack of pads or tampons—it’s a barrier to education, safety, and self-worth. That’s why we go beyond product distribution. Through hygiene education, peer support, and advocacy, we’re addressing the systemic neglect that allows young women to fall through the cracks.

We envision a Boston where no young woman has to choose between her health and her next meal—where every girl is empowered to live with confidence, resilience, and dignity.

About Us

Our Story

Red Umbrella Project began with one question: What happens when a girl without a home gets her period?

The answer was heartbreaking—and sparked a movement. We realized that thousands of homeless teen girls across Boston silently endure the trauma of period poverty, often resorting to unsafe alternatives or missing school altogether.

What started as a grassroots effort to deliver a few care kits quickly grew into a citywide mission of love and advocacy. We saw that menstrual dignity could open doors—to health, to education, and to self-worth.

We’ve met girls like Jessica, who finally attended a job interview feeling clean and confident, and Amber, who cried when she realized someone cared enough to write her a note in a care kit.

Their stories aren’t just inspiration—they’re proof that small acts of dignity create big ripples of change.

“When you give a girl dignity, you give her back her voice.”

We're Just Getting Started

The need is urgent—and growing. Every day, more girls face the harsh reality of homelessness without access to basic care. But with your support, we can write a different story—one where every girl feels seen, supported, and safe.

Together, we can shift the narrative from neglect to nurture. From silence to strength. From shame to dignity.
